From the main road entrance that leads into my neighborhood sits a gas station run by a recent college graduate and his father.
They've got six of these…
And since it's less than two miles from my house, I'll stop by about every other week to fill up the Suburban.
When I head in to grab a drink, we typically chat about their business and, being that they're newer to the area, I try to connect them with people who can help them expand…
But I've noticed over time that, without fail, there are four people planted in front of the "skill games"…
And only four are available.
Now, if you're not familiar, these are the arcade-looking, gambling machines that have become increasingly popular.
(And controversial due to the opposition's claim that they're games of chance.)
In fact, some folks will sit outside with a cigarette while they wait their turn…
I've even watched someone walk in to check for an opening before mumbling, "I'll just come back."
Clearly, there's some sort of thrill to it…
Or is there more?
Is it because they believe they'll win life-changing money and ride off into the sunset, humming the melody to Johnny Paycheck's famous tune?
I doubt that…
From what I gather, the patrons who enjoy these games do so because there's an element of control and an opportunity to walk away with profit based on their own ability.
That sounds a lot like trading…
Game of Chance You've likely heard someone say that the stock market is nothing more than a casino…
Essentially likening it to a game of roulette… a game of chance.
But in my experience, I've realized that most of the people who say this don't trade or invest…
While not doing either is completely fine, I simply disagree with the premise.
Similar to the skill games that have locked up the attention of people just two miles from me, success in the market requires more than just chance...
If it were all about luck, the use of Japanese candlestick charts - the same ones you see today - would have never lasted 271 years…
And fundamental analysis would have amounted to nothing more than numbers for accountants to crunch.
You see, I've never played craps and I have no intention of doing so.
But I will happily sit at a poker table for ten hours, no questions asked…
I feel the same way when it comes to trading.
How to Sharpen Your Skills The real question here is, why trade at all?
Why invest?
If you're doing both, your reasons for either may vary… I know mine do.
Each strategy carries with it similar characteristics, or "edges", but one requires far more focus and skill considering the amount of time actively spent on it...
That's the trading.
Still, what's more important is understanding the purpose behind your willingness to use these "skills."
It could be to pay off your Tesla… to buy a home in St. Croix… to fund your kids' college education…
…Or even to board a flight to Vegas just so you can blow it all on Blackjack…
It doesn't matter, so long as you have a reason.
And that reason will be what pushes you to sharpen your skills…
Otherwise, you're just playing a game of chance.

- DiDi Goes Down - The biggest IPO of the year may also take home the title for the biggest flop. Less than a week after debuting as a publicly traded company, DiDi Global received notice that the CAC (Cyberspace Administration of China) was forcing the company's app to be removed from Chinese app stores. Similar to other Big Tech antitrust concerns, the CAC alleges that the ride-hailing giant violated regulations with regards to personal data usage. However, users who already downloaded the app can still request rides. What did Cramer say last week? Buy as much as you can?
- The Whales Are Back... and Bullish - According to Glassnode, new blockchain data shows that wealthy investors have begun buying Bitcoin again, with size. The cryptocurrency's "Whales", or wealthier entities with large amounts of an asset, have been increasing over the last six weeks and peaked on Friday with little to no change over the weekend. For the first time, the whales are the ones doing the saving.
- Oil Talks Turn Sludgy - The OPEC+ conversation remains delayed as two of the world's biggest oil producers continue to be at odds over production. The United Arab Emirates has yet to agree to terms despite Saudi Arabia's plan receiving support from a number of OPEC+ members. The UAE's Prince Abdulaziz stated that it was "the whole group versus one country" and has requested an extension of the current agreement. Is it time to buy oil stocks?
