Apr 30, 2022 Daily DC Insider Image Source: DOJ Alabama's Senate Bill (S.B.) 184, which prohibits transgender therapy for children, was challenged by the Justice Department in a lawsuit filed on Friday.
On the basis of equal protection, the Department of Justice claims that criminalizing children's sexual transition is a violation of the Fourteenth Amendment.
Governor Kay Ivey of Alabama enacted legislation this month making it illegal for children to take puberty-blocking medicines. Prescription of puberty blockers or hormones to transgender youth to aid in their gender change is now a crime punishable by up to 10 years in jail, according to the measure.
A day after state lawmakers enacted the anti-puberty measure, Ivey signed it into law. Immediately, groups pledged to sue to overturn the statute.
