Dear Trader,
I'll never forget when I became Independent.
I had been working for a large mutual fund company as the Chief Investment Officer. I had helped drive the assets under management from $300 million to over $1 billion.
How did we do that?
When I was hired, I asked the owner how much money was going to go into marketing. The answer was basically zero. So I told him we could still get to $1 billion but only if I could completely control the investment process. We would have money rushing into our funds if we could get our funds to be one of the top funds in each category. So our natural resources fund had to be a top natural resource fund, our health care fund had to be in the top health care funds.
I started as the only portfolio manager for our six funds. So that was:
- Growth
- Health Care and biotech
- Natural Resources
- Income
- High Technology
- International
Over the next two years, I hired more portfolio managers so that I ended up only managing the Growth Fund and just supervising the other portfolio managers and analysts.
The results? I got the Growth Fund to be the highest performing Growth fund in the US and all of our funds were in the top 15% of their category.
The result?
Money flooded into the funds so that we quickly got to our target of $1 billion!
So why did I leave such a primo job?
I discovered that they were doing something legal but unethical for the overseas funds we were managing. They weren't doing it for the US funds, just the ones sold overseas.
I can't be involved in something unethical so I quit.
It was a hard decision because I wasn't psychologically ready to be independent. All of a sudden, I was thrust into independence.
I gulped hard and went for it.
Sure, I could have gotten another job. The performance was so spectacular that it would have been no problem. But, with trepidation, I decided to retire again and just live off my trading. And I've been doing it ever since!
