1987: The New York Times declared the “fifth birthday of the new bull market” after the Dow Jones Industrial Average crested 2,700 (but closed at 2,691.42) for the first time. Despite the infamous Black Monday when the Dow fell 24% on October 19, 1987, U.S. stocks ended 1987 up. This bull market lasted 13 years.
