Dear Trader,
Some traders want to make 1000% per year. Some are happy with 10%. How about you? Would you be happy with 30%?
One of the most common strategies to make money is covered calls. This is a simple, low risk strategy using options. You buy 100 shares of a stock and sell 1 call option. That's it.
The basic concept is that the price of the stock is bullish or at least neutral. This means you hopefully make some money on the rally in the stock. But then you sell an overvalued option which hopefully expires worthless so you end up making the total premium of the option as profit.
One critical reason for using this strategy is that it is a lower risk strategy. The profit from the option provides protection on the downside. For example, let's say you buy a stock at 50 and sell the 50 strike option at $5. This means that the price of the stock can drop by $5 at expiration and you are breaking even not losing $5. So there is low risk on a covered call strategy.
How much money can you make?
I have a strategy called Courtney's Covered Call Crushers (CCCC) that can make 100% or more. But it is much riskier.
I managed a covered call mutual fund for years and averaged 14% per year and never made over 16%.
Well, how much can you make?
I think you can make 50%+ using CCCC but you will be taking on higher risk. The mutual fund returns were much lower because I was only able to do covered calls on big liquid stocks which were very efficient. I had hundreds of millions of dollars to invest and that meant I couldn't do CCCC which focuses on less liquid instruments.
But there is a third way in between. I call it the Carry Trade.
Basically, you do a normal covered call but borrow money to buy the stock. This one factor will almost double the returns. So, if I was doing 14% doing normal covered calls, that would be boosted to something like 22% by borrowing money. That is a very high return considering how low risk the trade it!
Obviously, there are a lot of nuances in the program but that is the basic concept.
One key nuance is that the stocks that I select are stocks with high dividends which boosts my return even higher!
