Published By Banyan Hill Publishing | | | | Published By Banyan Hill Publishing | | | | Will Patrick Mahomes Wreck Your Portfolio? By Charles Sizemore Chief Editor, The Banyan Edge | It’s Super Bowl weekend … so I hope you’ve already stocked up on burgers, beer and whatever else you’re planning to wolf down while we watch the Chiefs and Eagles duke it out for the title. But no matter who you’re rooting for, come Monday, you should be sure to keep an eye on how stocks react… I am, of course, talking about the “Super Bowl Indicator.” It goes like this. Historically, a win by a National Football Conference team has preceded a positive year of performance for the Dow Jones Industrial Average. A win from an American Football Conference team portends a losing year. It sounds silly, but the indicator has a fairly high success rate. It’s been correct for 41 of the last 56 Super Bowls, for a 73% success rate. So if the Philadelphia Eagles win, so the indicator goes … the bear market is over! But if Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs pull it off, then, alas … we’re looking at another year of pain. Not that anyone asked, but I’m rooting for the Chiefs. I remember some truly epic college football games between Mahomes’ Texas Tech Red Raiders and my TCU Horned Frogs, and my money is on my fellow Texan. The Super Bowl Indicator is the perfect example of “correlation does not mean causation.” The winner of a football game has nothing to do with interest rates, corporate earnings or any of the other factors that actually drive market performance. (Though I suppose a win for the Eagles might be bad for insurance companies… Philly fans are known to go on destructive rampages in post-game celebrations…) As fun as it is, today we’ll take a look at the real indicators the Banyan team is following this week… But before we get there, I want to mention one quick thing. Inflation and dollar weakness will likely be two of the dominant trends over the next year and likely beyond. Traditionally, gold has been a good hedge against dollar depreciation. I’m not a gold bug, and this isn’t an ideological thing for me. But I do keep a roll of gold coins tucked away somewhere safe. I consider it prudent diversification. At any rate, if you’ve been looking to add a little gold to your portfolio, I’d recommend you talk to our friends at the Hard Asset Alliance. They offer an easy and convenient service for both buying and storing gold. And if you sign up through this link, they offer six months of free storage at one of their secure vaults.
