Market Review:
Settlement or Last Traded Price
Was the month of May positive, or negative? The answer will likely not surprise many. The truth is it depends. The Settlement price at the end of May was 4190.50. That shows the month of May positive by half a point. However, the last traded price in May was 4188.25, which shows the month down by 1.75 points.
My personal preference is to compare like to like. The open of June at 4188.50 is below the open of May at 4190.00. The truth is though, it does not matter too much. Both numbers are above the quarter open of 4127.00, and there is plenty of trading between here and the end of the quarter.
One thing to be aware of though. This kind of closeness in the numbers creates confusion, and the confusion can create opportunity.
