The Latest |
🎓🏀 It was always burning
The GIST: Reigning champion No. 7 LSU women's basketball star Angel Reese missed her second straight game on Monday, further fueling off-court rumors surrounding the Tigers, which their polarizing head coach Kim Mulkey has done little to dispel.
The timeline: On November 14th, Reese was benched in the second half of LSU's 109–79 win over Kent State, which Mulkey called a "coach's decision." The 2023 Final Four Most Outstanding Player didn't travel with the team to their Friday win against Southeastern Louisiana and remained absent from the Tigers' 106–47 Monday home dub over Texas Southern.
What they're saying: Not much. Reese has been near-silent, only tweeting out "please don't believe everything you read" on Sunday. As for Mulkey (who notably has a history of callous statements), she said Friday that "Angel is a part of this basketball team and we hope to see her sooner rather than later," before quashing further questioning on Monday. Here's hoping Reese has the support she needs.
🏀 Got a secret, can you keep it?
The GIST: The NY Knicks are suing the Toronto Raptors for more than $10M after alleging a former Knicks employee shared confidential documents with the Canadian squad. Pearson Hardman, you up?
The context: Back in August, the Knicks filed a lawsuit against the Raptors, accusing them of conspiring to steal scouting information.
- Ikechukwu "Ike" Azotam, a former assistant video coordinator for the Knicks, was named as the "mole," with allegations that he sent Toronto private NY files at the request of the Raptors' newly named head coach, Darko Rajaković.
- The Raps tried to dismiss the lawsuit in October, calling it "baseless" because the materials Azotam (who is now their new head of video) accessed were public information. They also asked for NBA Commissioner Adam Silver to settle the dispute himself.
The latest: In addition to seeking millions in damages, the Knicks' latest suit also targets Silver, requesting that the most powerful man in the league recuse himself from any in-house mediation given his personal relationship with Raptors owner Larry Tanenbaum. Messy.
🤝 Matches made in hoops heaven
Women's college hoops duos that just make sense:
- UConn head coach Geno Auriemma and yelling
- LSU head coach Kim Mulkey and flashy 'fits
- Iowa star Caitlin Clark and her name, image, and likeness (NIL) deal with State Farm
It's no wonder State Farm struck a landmark deal with the reigning Player of the Year — they're both assist machines.
- While Clark dishes out dubs on the court, State Farm is drawing more eyes to the women's game by investing hard in the fanbase. Case in point? They're helping bring you this newsletter for free — a dime as crisp as the pleats in Jake's khakis.
