From The Gist Team

Good morning!

BRB, sprinting into this new week just like, you guessed it, Taylor Swift running into Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce's arms after her show this weekend. Now that's a relaxing thought.

  • P.S. GIST HQ will be re-watching those clips together during our offsite this week, so there'll be no newsletter on Wednesday. We'll meet you back here on Friday, but first drop everything now and catch up on today's news…

NWSL Championship

⚽ From worst to first

The GIST: Just one year after finishing last in the league, No. 6 NJ/NY Gotham FC defeated No. 4 OL Reign 2–1 in Saturday's final, a storybook ending for the first-time NWSL champions. Oh, and the future's only getting brighter.

How it happened: Both first-half Gotham goals (netted by forwards Lynn Williams and Esther González) were assisted by forward Midge Purce, who scorched three Seattle players and executed a perfect corner en route to earning Championship MVP honors.

  • Reign midfielder Rose Lavelle kept Seattle's hopes alive, nailing her team's lone goal and creating dangerous chances until the final whistle, but Gotham's defense-first approach, anchored by another retiring legend, captain Ali Krieger, proved too much for Seattle's attack.

Zooming out: The perfect follow-up to a season so dramatic it could win an Emmy? A brand new, record-setting, multi-million dollar media deal, of course. Last Thursday, the NWSL announced a new four-year, $240M television partnership with CBS Sports, ESPN, Prime Video, and Scripps Sports. HYFR.

The GIST: College football's behemoths continued to separate themselves from the rest of the field on Saturday, but the biggest fireworks came off the gridiron, with some explosive coaching updates.

No Harbaugh, no problem: No. 2 Michigan secured a 24–15 statement win over now–No. 12 Penn State without head coach (HC) Jim Harbaugh, whom the Big Ten banned from the sidelines for the rest of the regular season as punishment for the program's ongoing sign-stealing saga.

A pair of coaching pink slips: Following Penn State's aforementioned loss, the team fired offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich yesterday. But Texas A&M had the weekend's most expensive firing, releasing HC Jimbo Fisher after a disappointing five and a half seasons, with a $77.6M final paycheck. Jim-bye.

Together with State Farm

⚽ Unbeatable coverage

Much like our friends at State Farm, San Diego Wave FC defender Naomi Girma is a pro at providing crucial coverage, including anchoring her squad's backline en route to the Wave clinching their first NWSL Shield in front of 30K devoted fans.

  • And even though the NWSL season has wrapped, State Farm is there, steadfastly supporting all things fútbol, from the FIFA Women's World Cup to the NWSL playoffs. Goals, indeed.

Buzzer Beaters

🏈 Minnesota Vikings quarterback (QB) Joshua "The Passtronaut" Dobbs threw a career-high 268 yards to lead the Vikings to their fifth straight win, while Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray orchestrated a game-winning drive in his first game in 11 months.

  • Not to be outshined, NY Jets QB Aaron Rodgers announced that he's aiming for a mid-December return after suffering an Achilles tear a mere two months ago. Wild.

🎿 In water is wet news, Mikaela Shiffrin is her. Already the most decorated alpine skier of all time, Shiffrin earned her 89th career World Cup victory on Sunday, winning the slalom event in Levi, Finland.

🏒 Laila Edwards made history in Team USA's 5–2 Rivalry Series win over Team Canada on Saturday, becoming the first Black woman to play for the national team.

🎓🏑 And then there were four. The NCAA field hockey national tournament semis are locked in with No. 1 UNC, No. 2 Northwestern, No. 3 Duke, and unranked Virginia advancing to Friday's final four.

🎓⚽ While the men's NCAA soccer tourney kicks off after tonight's selection show, we've already seen the upset of the tourney on the women's side: defending champs UCLA were ousted in the first round by UC Irvine. Stunner.

🏀 Philadelphia 76er Kelly Oubre Jr. has been released from the hospital after being struck by a vehicle and breaking a rib on Saturday.

New world No. 1 Lilia Vu won her fourth tournament of the year yesterday, nabbing a three-shot victory at The ANNIKA driven by Gainbridge LPGA event.

After a weekend of footy, the MLS Cup Playoffs Conference Semifinals are officially set, with the eight-team action set to kick off later this month.
