Our 2024 "Silly Stock Ticker Olympics"
Banyan Nation,
This year’s Summer Olympic Games had it all.
We saw the performance of a lifetime from American gymnast Simone Biles…
American runner Noah Lyles won gold in the 100m dash with an insanely slim .005 second margin of victory…
And Turkish shooter Yusuf Dikec became a meme for his casual, “hand-in-pocket” approach to taking home Olympic Silver:
So in that same Olympic spirit — the spirit of fraternity, respect and friendly competition — we’ve decided to host Banyan Hill’s first-ever “Silly Stock Ticker Olympics.”
The rules are simple…
We’re looking for eye-catching, silly stock tickers.
The kind of tickers that add a little character and jump off the screen at you. Nothing too corny. No profanity.
We’re looking for tickers with just the right amount of personality. Because the right stock ticker can help you get noticed in a competitive industry. And it’s also a clever way to communicate your company’s culture to investors.
So let’s start the countdown with our bronze medalist:
Bronze in the “Silly Stock Ticker Olympics:” Harley Davidson (NYSE: HOG)
Harley guys, and bikers in general, aren’t usually known for their sense of humor. Especially not on the road.
But the company’s ticker “HOG” is a playful reference to the bike’s nickname. And the name certainly fits. Harleys are noisy, messy, expensive burdens that some people simply can’t bear to live without.
We feel the exact same way about bacon.
Harley’s playful ticker also helps remind investors of how much fun they can have on their two-wheelers. For that, we give HOG the bronze.
Silver in the “Silly Stock Ticker Olympics:” Sleep Country Canada Holdings (TSE: ZZZ)
There’s no shortage of clever tickers out there. EAT, CAKE, LUV (which sounds like it would make a great novel). These tickers are good for a chuckle and they’re easy to remember. But it’s really difficult to pick a winner here, because they’re almost all equally silly.
At the end of the day, we chose to reflect the open and international nature of the Silly Stock Ticker Olympics, and we’re giving the silver to our Canadian friends at Sleep Country. We know, this is a controversial decision. But it wouldn’t be the Olympics without one of those.
Gold in the “Silly Stock Ticker Olympics:” DMC Global (Nasdaq: BOOM)
This one really speaks for itself. You can’t help but give it a little chuckle.
DMC Global runs a hopelessly complicated, highly specialized business. Just explaining the company’s operations would be dull enough to put an accountant to sleep. But they’re also experts in the world of explosion-welding.
And now, the company’s ticker explodes off the screen every time it slides by.
That will be all for this year’s Silly Stock Ticker Olympics! We tried to get Snoop Dogg to officiate our closing ceremony but he was already double-booked. What’s YOUR pick for the market’s silliest stock ticker? And have you ever invested in a company simply because the ticker caught your eye? Let us know at BanyanEdge@Banyanhill.com.

- End of an Era for “Magnificent 7” Tech Stocks
Last year belonged to Magnificent Seven stocks. Each posted impressive gains, with even the biggest laggard of the bunch delivering twice the return posted by the S&P 500 index. But now, with interest rates set to fall, these dominant stocks may soon be passing the torch to a whole new generation of tech breakouts.
- How to Make Money in Stocks When Fear Reigns
"You could smell the fear" when stocks plunged this Monday. Is our current bull market at an end? Or should you buy when others are selling? Charles Mizrahi has the answer...
- Here’s What’s Behind the Sell-Off and What’s Ahead
Every few years, the market serves up a golden opportunity as overly leveraged investors (mostly hedge funds) unwind, losing trades all at once. This has caused volatility to skyrocket to levels only witnessed during the financial crisis and COVID crash. Both of these were amazing buying opportunities. And this time will be no different.
- Even A Superhero Can’t Save Disney’s Lagging Stock
Producing full-length feature movies isn't cheap, and Marvel movies are no exception. If you factor in other costs like distribution and marketing, the film would have to make $450 million to be profitable.
