April 12, 2025       Tabula Rasa John Locke advocated that the human mind was a blank slate at birth, and that as a result, it could be formed and shaped through a lifetime of good values and experiences. But because he was a snooty, 17th-century philosopher, he didn’t say “blank slate,” he said “Tabula Rasa,” which means — you’re never gonna guess it — “blank slate.”  Seriously, John?  (Just kidding. We love John Locke.) I think we need to go into next week with a “Tabula Rasa” mindset. Or put another way, “what happens in the week of April 7th, 2025 stays in the week of April 7th, 2025.”  Of course, what’s past is prologue, and we can’t ignore what’s been going on entirely. But I’m going to view next week as an entirely new market, and try to read the tea leaves in real time. There’s no point in guessing about what’s coming next, no value in “finding a bottom.” You just have to take the market each day as it comes, “tabula rasa,” and do your best to take advantage of circumstances until we have something a little more predictable.  In the meantime, enjoy your weekend!
