Biggest Strategic Blunder Since Afghanistan Pullout

Full Throttle Brief Today 10 AM ET

You,

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that President Trump has told aides he's willing to end Operation Epic Fury - even if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed.

If this reporting is accurate, this would be the biggest strategic blunder since Joe Biden's horrific Afghanistan withdrawal.

Leaving a badly damaged but not defeated Iran in control of the most critical energy chokepoint on the planet would be devastating for energy markets and catastrophic for our allied Gulf nations - who, by the way, are reportedly asking Trump to CONTINUE the campaign until Iran ceases to be a threat.

I was leery from the beginning when they put a time frame on Epic Fury. That's step one of what NOT to do in military operations. You leave when the objectives are complete - not on a date. Trump has criticized other presidents for doing the exact same thing and routinely chastises reporters who ask about timelines.

Yet here we are.

Brent crude is above $112. WTI just crossed $103. Gas nationally just hit $4 a gallon - up 35% since the war began a month ago. Strait of Hormuz shipping traffic has collapsed 95%. And Iran's parliament just approved a toll system - in Chinese yuan - for any vessel that wants to transit.

Sure, we may see a relief rally on headlines that Trump wants to leave and declare a tactical victory. TAW - Trump Always Wins. But make no mistake: this would be a strategic disaster.

Yes, Iran's nuclear program is destroyed for decades. Great. But how's the $20-a-gallon gas going to feel?
