From The Gist Team

Hello, weekend!

The only thing better than a short week? A short week with a weekend of NFL action on deck. ICYMI: Yesterday's special edition season preview broke down all the deets before Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow became the highest-paid player in NFL history last night, and the Detroit Lions kicked things off with a 21–20 upset win over the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.

The GIST: Move over, Broadway — the best drama in New York is going down in Flushing Meadows, where the US Open women's final is officially set, and the men's matchup will be determined tonight ahead of Sunday's final. Time for an epic curtain call.

Women's: Turn up that Miley song because, after last night's protest delayed semis win over No. 10 Karolína Muchová, No. 6 American Coco Gauff is through to the US Open finals, making her the first teen since Serena Williams to reach the Grand Slam's biggest stage. She'll face No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka, who topped No. 17 Madison Keys in three sets last night, dashing hopes of an all-American final.

  • Gauff and Sabalenka have squared off five times before, with Coco holding a narrow 3-2 all-time edge. However, Sabalenka is playing the best tennis of her life, reaching at least the semis at all four majors in 2023 and winning the Australian Open back in January. This is going to be good.

Men's: A 2023 Wimbledon finals rematch between No. 2 Novak Djokovic and No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz might feel inevitable, but not if unseeded American Ben Shelton and No. 3 Daniil Medvedev have anything to say about it. After answering the call in his quarters upset of compatriot No. 10 Frances Tiafoe, Shelton will need that tenacity on speed dial to oust the Joker today at 3 p.m. ET.

  • Then, at 7 p.m. ET, the action will stay (hopefully not too) hot with a Medvedev vs. Alcaraz Wimbledon semis rematch. Medvedev has knocked off the reigning US Open champ once (back in 2021), but Alcaraz has two victories this year.
NWSL Challenge Cup final

🏆 Ain't about the cha-ching cha-ching

The GIST: One team will leave the pitch with glory (and a $1.1M check) when the Challenge Cup tournament takes a final bow in tomorrow's 12:30 p.m. ET championship showdown between the reigning champ North Carolina Courage and Racing Louisville FC. Let's go, girls.

The details: First things first — this is not the end-of-season NWSL Championship (which kicks off in November) or the NWSL Shield (awarded to the top regular-season team in the league). The Challenge Cup is a separate season-long tournament, providing the 12 NWSL teams a chance to compete for additional bragging rights (and prize money) outside of regular-season or postseason play.

  • This year's edition will reportedly be the final iteration of the tourney, which launched in 2020 as a way to get players back on the pitch during the pandemic.
  • The tournament has notably been the subject of criticism throughout its existence, largely due to scheduling conflicts. Back to the drawing board, they go.

The matchup: The Courage locked in their finals spot with a 1–0 dub over the Kansas City Current on Wednesday. Two North Carolina players to know: USWNT rising star defender Emily Fox and Brazilian forward Kerolin, who's currently tied for first in the Golden Boot race.

  • Meanwhile, Louisville is fighting for their first-ever trophy after booking their title game ticket in Wednesday's 1–0 upset of the star-studded OL Reign. This deep squad certainly knows how to play spoiler and will charge into battle led by another USWNTer: midfielder Savannah DeMelo.
  • North Carolina is undefeated against Louisville in regular-season play this year, but both matches have been tight contests, setting up a superior clash tomorrow. Get those golazos, gals.
