| Ripple Effect — April 22, 2025
With gold topping $3,500 overnight, the metal is up nearly 30% since the start of the year.
In the meantime, stocks are stuck in a range, not quite in bear market territory from their recent lows, but still well off the top in correction territory. That’s put stocks down over 10% since January 1.
The result? One of the most unusual charts you’ll likely ever see. Since the start of 2025, gold has outperformed the stock market by more than 40%:  The yellow beast is asserting itself as the flight to safety trade when confidence in the stock market, U.S. government debt and the U.S. dollar are all under suspicion globally.
In time, the jitters will get worked out and this spread will narrow. That could come from a jump in the stock market following any positive development on the trade and tariff front. And following this kind of move, traders are going to want to take some gold profits.
When that happens, as it does… we’ll see a buying opportunity for the metal, as we expect gold to trend even higher in the years ahead.
